In memoriam Harold Pinter

News broke overnight that the playwright Harold Pinter has passed away. I once saw 'The Birthday Party' years ago when I was an impressionable callow youth. It was quite an eye-opener to see that you could write such direct and original material and still be succesful.

Some of his dialogues are chilling and so hard-hitting, always a comment on some state of affairs as perceived by Pinter. Apparently, he made his debut as an author in Bristol's Old Vic, a lovely old theatre where his claustrophobic plays would find an ideal stage.

Another great talent passes on. Tempus fugit..

A highly original Christmas gift

Please allow me a few lines to tell you all about a fun and seasonal website I have found. I just want to share this good cheer at this time of the holidays. It happens to be a great website where I have uploaded a real photo of yours truly and virtually sat on Santa’s lap, just like the good old days when I was a small boy. You know the sort of thing: All excited about Christmas and possibly getting a great holiday gift, we have all been there.

You will find that there is a great photo frame that is not only digital but has a really remarkable feature. Using the CEIVA digital photo frame you can have your family and friends send pictures instantly to your photo frame from wherever they may find themselves. To make a long story short: it works remotely which is a great feature. People can send their images straight to your photo frame using a cell phone or a computer.

At any moment you can have a new picture appear on your digital photo frame. I think this is a great gadget and I would certainly love one of these for myself. This really is great fun and I think the fact that you can send pictures directly to someone else’s CEIVA digital photo frame is a very exciting feature. Have a look for yourselves to see what the fuss is all about.

Check out this site if you’ve got a wish and have a good look around, then upload your very own photo and ‘sit on Santa’s lap’. Also, there is a contest that you can enter. A winner is chosen each day for the duration of the contest and twenty nine winners in total will be picked. There is a cash prize of five hundred dollars per winner, how about that? Surely, you’d want to get into that?

Check it out now, as it is a fun site and you will find out about the CEIVA digital photo frame, which is a great idea for a gift for someone else, or yourself.

Muse

Dear friends, good news to convey as I can tell you that the Muse has made a welcome return. I've been writing poems with which I am quite content, I've been working on a story that may go somewhere, and I'm writing journalistic articles which seem to be valued by the editor and readers of a certain outlet. All in all, I'm quite happy. I had been hoping I would be inspired to write again and it seems to be working out just fine.

Great Emerald Forest snacks

Have I told you that I love great new snacks or nice chewing gums or sweets. There are some lovely snacks out there but it is not often that you find a great sweet or snack that you really love. After all, we are here to enjoy ourselves aren’t we? At least enjoying nice foods should be a part of it, in my honest opinion.

You should definitely check out the wonderful products from Emerald Forest as they are simply something else entirely. Emerald Forest produces the highest quality natural sweeteners and snacks so make sure you check them out.

Did you know that Emerald Forest Gums, Mints, Fruit Sours, and Coffee Shots contain extremely delicious natural sweeteners and flavours, and colours. You simply have to try these for your self. Moreover, you do not have to worry about your teeth as these wonderful Emerald Forest snacks shield against cavities and plaque, so that is no problem whatsoever.

Nerdfest

That nerdy sitcom is on the telly. You know the one with a few nerds living across the hall from that nice blonde girl who was in '8 Rules' or something. Funny how the Americans seem to have a thing for the stereotype of the nerd. I suppose it's the liking of the underdog syndrome. It's sort of funny but a bit lame. Like most sitcoms, then..

The Orchid Boutique

One of my favourite pastimes is going to the beach. When I used to live far away from the sea I used to miss going to the beach for a swim or just to hang out. I love getting there nice and early when the beach is quiet and peaceful. But, of course we all like to look good when we go to the beach or a swimming pool. If you are looking for some great Agua Bendita Swimwear then I have just the thing for you.

Check out TheOrchidBoutiqe.com for a wonderful range of very cool swimwear. You will be amazed at some of the stuff you can get here. They have great designer swimwear for fashionistas and also designer swimsuits for women and juniors. Check out the website; you will love the swimwear on offer at TheOrchidBoutique.com but that is not all by any means.

TheOrchidBoutique also has a great range of fashionable jewelry to complement your vogue style, so check it out. There is custom jewelry from Lolindo, who has created exclusive online styles just for TheOrchidBoutique. Don’t forget to check out this wonderful choice in fashion jewelry.

Great Aussie film

Went to see the epic Australia tonight. I enjoyed it very much although it certainly has its flaws. Wasn't too impressed with Nicole Kidman's pantomime English accent but the scenes of her arriving in Darwin and being introduced to Outback life were very funny and entertaining.
A fun romp with some stunning imagery and a good story.

Twitting

Someone I know just invited me to join Twitter and I have relented and did in fact join up. I've never really made much of a go with these social media applications and part of me thinks it's more 'for the kids' than the likes of me. But I could be wrong. We'll see. I regard this person who invited me highly enough to trust his judgement so we'll see what it will bring.

Blogging is something I enjoy because it involved writing. Keepin in touch with the world and his dog through endless social thingeys is something I am less keen on, to be honest. Life's just to short to keep chronicling it as you go to all and sundry.

I find life to be fairly fragmented at the best of time and I have to pick and choose what I spend my energy on wisely, I feel. Oh, there's a new poem on http://ancientheartmagazine.blogspot.com/

How to attract the girls

Wouldn’t we all like to know the secret of how to seduce a woman like a genuine full-fledged lothario? How did Casanova do it, really? Some women will say it’s not just about looks but a man needs to have a sense of humour and a modicum of intelligence as well. I am sure that these factors have something to do with it but on a basic level there is also something like pheromone attraction that comes into play in the interaction between the sexes.

After all, research has shown that human beings are highly adept at "sniffing out" compatible sexual partners. It has been proven that natural body scents play a crucial part in deciding whether we find someone attractive. The latest research was published by the Philadelphia's Monell Chemical Senses Center in the journal of Psychological Science. Using brain scans, researchers were in a positon to show that synthetic pheromones stimulated the brains of heterosexual women.

Sports

Sports and politics. That's what you get a lot of here in Australia. Whenever you turn on the telly it's either some sports event, often involving big roaring terrain vehicles, or footage from parliament or someone protesting against something or other. I prefer the films and Australian comedies. I've seen a few funny satirical shows as well, some of which are quite good. There's a lot more to discover..

New project

I have started work on a new writing project. Of course, the whole thing is very hush hush, you understand, but suffice to tell you that progress is good and that I am enjoying exerting some creative energy once again. It is not poetry either, it is a story and exactly what type of story it will turn out to be remains uncertain as yet.

But I am relishing the act of writing again. There simply is nothing like the thrill of being in full flow and just creating something out of nothing. I do think it is the greatest pleasure of all.

Writers and friends

A friend of mine who is a published author suggested I go and see what the NSW Writers Centre can do for me. I will, in due course, check them out. Already, I've advertised the mag in the local paper so I am hoping some attention may be garnered from my initial promotional efforts. Meanwhile, I have to keep up with a forever expanding number of blogs. Fragmentary, that's the word for it.

Australian poetry. Two enticing wordz.

Just spent a great night out in the centre of Sydney. What a great town this is. A friend and I had a few drinks in a pub that overlooked the famous harbour. A holiday in Tenby

The Celtic countries of Britain have always held a great fascination for me. From Cornwall in the south west to bonnie Scotland up north; they are just wonderful places to visit. But perhaps the jewel in the crown has to be lovely green Wales, place of wonder and mystery. If you want to spend a holiday or a few days somewhere truly magical, then you may well want to consider a Short Break Wales, as this amazing country just has so much to offer the visitor.

You could hire a Tenby Self Catering Cottage to make the most of your holiday or visit. Tenby is a fabulous place and you will find so much to entertain you. Check out Celtic Haven in Tenby and you will have a whale of a time, guaranteed!

It really is an amazing place and did you know that once upon a time the estate of Lord St David dominated the cliff-top that overlooks Lydstep bay and the stunning isle of Caldey? You will find the original twelfth century stone buildings that have been refurbished as five star luxurious cottages right here in the only coastal National Park in the United Kingdom. The Celtic vibe

The other day I was happily watching the recent BBC adaptation of 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' and among other things I was really taken by the strings in the soundtrack. They were just so haunting and melancholy and really suited the tragic happenings in the story. In a way they seemed very Irish and I once again thought how much I love Celtic music. The soul is swept away and the heart rendered helpless. It moves me to the core.

A camping holiday in France

There are a great many ways to enjoy a great holiday in a wide range of countries across the continent of Europe. The sheer diversity of places to go and have a holiday is fascinating. During my youth, my family and I used to go camping and we had some truly wonderful holidays. We always enjoyed staying somewhere near water, a lake or a river or the sea or else somewhere with mountains and forests. Sometimes, we were lucky enough to be able to combine these two requirements. My parents were always happy when my little brother and I were having a good time. And, of course, a camping holiday makes it easy for everyone to enjoy themselves to the max.

I would recommend the lovely country of France for any type of holiday or visit but Camping France is a great way to spend the holidays. France, quite simply, has it all; great mountain ranges such as the Alps and the Jura, beautiful forested areas such as the Vosges, the coastal delights of the Cote D’Azur and so much more. Of course, there are fabulous cities as well. Imagine enjoying an authentic Bouillabaise in the city of Marseille, for instance. Or visit wonderful Avignon, what could be better?

But a camping holiday in France is bound to be a success and please the whole family. There are great camp sites in wonderful locations all over France and you will always find something to your liking in any of them. Check out French Freedom Holidays for some great tips and suggestions on the best camp sites. Choose from any destination such as La Loubine, La Pinede, Seqoala Parc and many, many more. There are some superb campsites dotted along the French Atlantic coast, which is a wonderful place to spend your hard earned holiday. Go ahead and check out the website for more information.

My poetry magazine lives once more!

Hear all about it: I just want you all to know that I have revived Ancient Heart Magazine from its slumber. You can now find the poetry mag right here. Have a look and see what you think. You may even consider submitting a poem your self or passing the link on to poetry loving friends you may know.

Submitting is in the format of a comment as the mag is in the shape of a blog. Just leave a comment on the last entry containing your poem and some other info. Full details are on the poetry mag/blog itself. Let's have some fun!

Brand new blog

Yes, I know...another blog? But this is my first Australian blog. You can find it here and it is simply titled Richard James. Don't know who that is. But seriously, I will be trying to build up this new blog with first impressions and experiences of my first few months/years in Sydney. It's just a few weeks until I will be leaving these shores for a new life in Australia.

I hope to continue blogging while Down Under and I already like the look of my new blog. The interface to use while writing is very handy as well. It's run by a thing called BlogNow and they do really seem like a good outfit.

Of course, in time, I will have to look into hosting my own domain site as well. A blogger's work is never done, it seems.

Property options

Everyone knows that and selling your home and moving can be a very trying and frustrating business. There are, of course, legal fees, dealings with estate agents, financial repercussions; there is just so much to worry about, all things considered. And yet, there are, of course, other options. Some people would just like to get cash for property and be done with it. It is certainly a clear option that may well be worth considering, depending on your circumstances.

There can be many reasons why you would want to sell your house quickly and make use of cash services. You may well want to release equity from your house. Or perhaps you would like to rent your home with the option of purchasing it back again.

There are many options available to you. Gateway Homes guarantees to make an offer to purchase your property regardless of the location or condition. They can complete in as little as a week. And don’t forget: You have no survey, solicitor or H.I.P fees to pay and it goes without saying that you are in control every step of the way.

There is a lot of confusion about the H.I.P. packages. The new law means that it is now even more costly and time consuming to sell your property on the open market. However, as Gateway Homes are private buyers you will not require a HIP and this means you can save time and money. They can arrange completion dates to suit you, which is always a good thing.

Gateway Homes are chain free cash buyers and because of this they are completely flexible and can complete in seven days or seven months, whatever is suitable to your situation. And there is absolutely no pressure on you to complete until you are ready. Check out their website to find out more about their wide range of services.

Bus trance

This morning, going in on the bus, I was slipping in to a mild trance. I was half asleep when my stop came around. Then the working day started. Oh well..

Laser vision

Eyesight is such an important feature for anyone, really. You just can’t underestimate how vital your eyes are when it comes to everyday life. But, perhaps even more so when you have to rely on extraordinary vision to carry out vital missions, such as certain military personnel and aviators. I came across some fascinating LASIK information I would like to tell you about.

Institutions such as NASA and the United States military are enhancing the performance of their personnel by adopting laser vision correction technologies which are already being used for civilian use. Using this amazing LASIK technology the Department of Defense and NASA are able to improve the vision of their personnel as they are confronted with extreme conditions that challenge them physically. It’s really quite amazing. Steven Shallhorn, M.D. has said that NASA and the Defense Department have shown that the LASIK technology exceeds the normal standards of safety and effectiveness.

Contemporary LASIK uses two lasers instead of just one. The LASIK procedures and highly sophisticated and well-established. The combination of these advanced laser technologies creates a custom-fit procedure that has been clinically proven to provide outstanding safety and visual results; which is a very impressive feat. When they were asked, a cool one hundred percent of naval aviators who had undergone the procedure said that they would recommend the surgery to other naval aviators.

Such a beautiful day

It is a glorious sunny day in September. Well, you already knew that it was September. Our two cats are sleepy, those lazy critters. Went out to do some shopping this morning and run into a chav mum effing and blinding after her chav children in the supermarket. It lifted up my heart to see such lovely communication between the generation divide.

Watched a bit of a cheesy Bruce Willis film. Yes, his co-actor was a child but no one was secretively dead or anything so it was a genuine stretch for old Brucey.

Meanwhile, I am in dire need of a haircut and who is going to take care of that, I wonder? Not the barber, surely? Strange name for a barber; Shirley..

Digital photos

Do you remember those days when perhaps it was your birthday and your mother made you pose in front of the photo camera holding your birthday presents? I can remember the awkwardness of having to pose like that at the insistent request of family members. But, looking back, I’m glad they did take photographs as now I just love looking through my photo albums and taking a trip down memory lane. Memories like that, captured on film are precious and irreplaceable.

Of course, these days taking pictures is even easier with the advent of digital photography. But, have you found that you don’t often get to see prints of your photos anymore? Well, I have. One solution that enhances your viewing pleasure is getting a digital photo frame from Digital Photo Frame Central. This way you would have a selection of your favourite digital pictures right there in your room or wherever you want to put your digital photo frame. Makes sense, right?

Don’t forget that a digital photo frame is a very handy and useful way to view your pictures. After all, a digital photo frame can display all your photos and of course you can put your memory card straight from your camera into your digital photo frame. You will get to see your photos in a spontaneous way and not have them locked away in albums you hardly ever get out. And, you wouldn’t need to print all of your pictures which, of course, can be expensive.

Dublin vista

View of the River Liffey as it flows through Dublin city centre. I love Dublin. It has a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere and, of course, there is nowhere better to sit back in one of the myriad of pubs and sip from a pint of the black stuff. When I was there the first time I made a point of visiting the statue of Oscar Wilde; a garish affair in bright, gaudy colours but certainly original enough, just like the great man himself.

It's strange to think of all of the great Irish writers who felt they had to leave Dublin and Ireland behind. Beckett, Joyce, Wilde; they all left and made their mark in London or Paris. They were voluntary exiles, which makes you wonder what Dublin was like in those days.

The Irish are poets and drinkers and I'm happy to say I possess those genes to a some extent. I'd love to go back to Ireland and see more of the countryside and the West. I vill be back.

Peter Pan

The wonderful little Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, London. It's a very special little statue to a whimsical fairy-tale character. I just love the story of how it suddenly appeared overnight as a surprise for the children of London. It is nice feeling that magic still happens every now and then, you only have to look for it..

Beautiful Snowdonia

The United Kingdom is a wonderfully diverse and beautiful country and a great place for a holiday. You can find any type of holiday destination you want here. One of the most beautiful parts is Wales and specifically the Snowdonia area. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and it is very popular with climbers, hikers or just people who love the outdoors. It is a wonderful place to go walking and enjoy the stunning scenery and welcoming people.

The Snowdonia National Park is located in the north west of Wales in the counties of Gwynedd and Conwy. The major part of the park is in Gwynedd with the north eastern section being in the county of Conwy, in particular the beautiful Conwy Valley. The National Park is a very diverse area ranging from the snow covered mountains of the Snowdonia Range through the lush green valleys and plains to beautiful coastal resorts with rocky headlands sheltering sandy beaches.

There is just so much to do in Snowdonia and you will find ancient monuments, amazing castles, outstanding golf courses and mountain bike trails for the sporty types. The landscape scenery is sure to impress anyone. For instance, the coast from Harlech to Barmouth is a long stretch of golden sands with massive sand dunes that the children will love and clear blue seas you can't help but want to swim in. A Snowdonia Holiday is sure to deliver perfect fun and relaxation for anyone. Enjoy!

William Blake's tomb

I was in St. Paul's Cathedral yesterday and somewhere deep below in the crypt I saw the tomb of William Blake. A shiver ran down my spine. To stand there facing that immortal name. There was a nice plate with his wonderful lines:

To see the world in a grain of sand,
and to see heaven in a wild flower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hands,
and eternity in an hour.

Seeing his name upon those ancient walls was stunning for me as a poet. I revelled in the moment. I shall never forget it.

The art of music

Is there anything in the world more uplifting than music? I love music in its many dazzling forms. I once had a few Spanish guitar lessons but unfortunately the guitar teacher was not particularly inspirational in his approach.

Perhaps I would have been much better off with something along the lines of the Amadeus Home Music School. They provide private lessons in the comfort of one’s own home at a time that works best. That would be ideal, all things considered.

What is a poet?

We write poetry to woe girls? Is that right? Certainly, most girls and women love the idea of being serenaded in verse and are quite succeptible to its charms. Surely, we don't write poems in order to communicate or anything that mundane? I hope not.
Perhaps we feel a burning need to convey. To convey something about ourselves, the world and our place in it. I used to want to celebrate life and being alive in my poems. Recent more disastrous personal circumstances have put the dampeners on that lofty aim to some extent.
Who knows? There are millions of different poems and many different poets. Let's celebrate what we like and deal with what we don't..

A holiday on the Isle of Wight

There are a great many wonderful places to visit if you after a great holiday in England. Personally, I have grown to love the English countryside with its green rolling hills and endless winding country roads. It really is a most engaging scenery that greats you wherever you go.

A truly fabulous place to see while you are on holiday has to be the Isle of Wight, just off the south coast. Isle of Wight Holidays are fantastic whatever you choose to do or see while there. You could go and visit Cowes for the famous sailing or go and see the Carisbrooke Castle Museum in Newport. There are so many things to see and do on the Isle of Wight. You could choose to stay in the Utopia Spa or The Hermitage Country House and be pampered and have a great time. It is all up to you.

Or you could go and spend some time in the Fort Victoria Country Park, which is sure to entertain the whole family. The possibilities are endless as you travel around the island. Perhaps you would like to visit Yarmouth or the Tennyson Monument in Freshwater for the poetically minded. Whatever you decide to do while you are on the Isle of Wight you are bound to have a great holiday in this most English of destinations.

But, I have made serious changes and the twist is that the new incarnation of the magazine is in blog format and submissions are to be made by posting a comment on the last published entry/poem. This way I am hoping to cut down on all the administrative chores that took up so much of my time with the magazine previously.
Have a look as we now have our very first submission in. Ancient Heart Magazine rides again!

Over

A marvel of tenuous delight,
Supreme agony turned frenzied bliss.
Love waits and age and dies
Only to re-emerge a sensual phoenix;
A sphinx of belonging,
eldorado of the soul,
Something at least that is not this.

Written a poem

Written a poem the other day. Why, is that news these days? you might ask. Well, sort of. I don't write much poetry at the moment as many other projects are taking up much of my spare time. In due course I hope this well change again as poetry remains my greatest passion. There is just something about it that appeals to me on a very deep level. I will post the poem in question in the next installment of this blog.

Mr Larkin

For a number of years now I have been meaning to look into the work of the poet Philip Larkin. I really like the dry wit of some of his poems and the fact that he was a librarian at Hull University makes for a sense of familiarity as well. That famous poem about parents and the way they bring up their children is, of course, a winner. But I would like to get to know some more of his poems. A project for the summer..

Poetic imagery

What, in your mind, is the ultimate poetic image? Perhaps you are thinking of a sunset, a golden beach with the palm trees gently swinging to as well as fro, or some spectacular mountain vista? For me, quite simply, it is the moon herself. Looking at a full moon shining all full and yellow through the branches of a tree around Samhain for instance would sum it up for me. But that's just me, I suppose.

Tricky stuff!

How did Houdini do it? I suppose Houdini excelled in conveying the mastery of his trade and some more modern illusionists emphasize the awesome show element a bit more. That said, I have always been fascinated with magic and illusionism. From the great stories about illusionists of the past, such as the great Houdini, to modern illusionists, I like the way they hold the audience in thrall and bring about great excitement when they achieve some of their amazing feats. You should always be left perplexed at how a certain trick or stunt has been performed without really wanting to know. You don’t want your illusions shattered, now do you?

There is a wonderful show on at the Luxor in Las Vegas and it is no less than CRISS ANGEL Believe. This is a fabulous show of illusionism that is certainly not be missed. Do check it out and also be aware that there a great text message contest that could see you winning two tickets to CRISS ANGEL Believe. Text 'Believe' to 22122 to win 2 tickets to 'CRISS ANGEL Believe' . Hurry and see if you are one of the lucky ones to win tickets to this amazing performance.

Everyone knows about the stunning Cirque Du Soleil. They so some amazing shows and now the new Cirque Du Soleil show features CRISS ANGEL Believe.
This show will have you transfixed and amazed and, of course, thoroughly entertained throughout. Catching a great show in Las Vegas is always a blast but this one will blow your socks off, guaranteed!

Friends in places

A friend of mine whom I don't get to see very often is currently quite successful as an author. She has been offered a publishing deal and she receives lots of invitations to speak at conferences and festivals. I am very happy for her as she deserves the success she is currently experiencing. I often wondered if I could speak in public if asked to do so. I'm not so sure. I think I lack some basic level of confidence but then some say that anyone can learn to speak well in public. Who knows? I'll keep scribbling on regardless..

Bangers and Mash

Sounds a bit like a novelty singing duo: 'Tonight for one night only: Bangers and Mash!'. But seriously, we enjoyed a nice lunch of sausages and mashed potatoes and once again it struck me just how undeserved it is that English cuisine should have such a bad reputation. I find most typical English dishes very nice indeed. Good hearty food that tastes great with a pint of Bitter. What more do you want?

Mobile phones

There once was a time, and I remember it well dear readers, when the only people who owned a mobile phone or cellular phone if that is your preferred vernacular, were yuppie business types and car salesmen in shiny loud suits, clutching a brick of a phone to their ear. It was still so rare that you really noticed when someone used a cell phone in public. Those days, of course, are gone and nowadays everyone and anyone is able to be the proud owner of a mobile phone.

In fact, you may want to check out TigaDuaCellular for a great deal on a cellular phone. They are a recognized distributor of wireless phones and accessories, as well as many other consumer electronics. They specialize in a very wide range of GSM phones and accessories.

Cleaning your place using less energy

Cleaning with the famous Dirt Devil is so easy and efficient that it is almost a joyful chore. But is there anyone who likes cleaning? I just mean: Do you genuinely enjoy the act of cleaning your apartment or your house? I happen to believe it is a necessary evil although I have to admit that I enjoy my house when I have just finished cleaning the place and I can relax in the knowledge that everything is nice and clean and fresh and tidy. A tidy house equals a tidy mind, that’s my humble opinion.

But having the appropriate equipment can make all the difference when it comes to cleaning your place properly. You need the right tools to do the job. It is just such a convenient piece of kit, handy and easy to get out and vacuum those bits of dirt or dust that catch your eye. And, in contrast to other small vacuum cleaners, a Dirt Devil has real power to do the job in hand, which is a big help. And now the well-known Dirt Devil is even better with its new AccuCharge Stick Vac and Hand Vac. It uses seventy percent less energy, which is great. And so AccuCharge has become the very first cordless cleaning technology to earn Energy Star approval.

Rober Gray

A friend of mine, who lives in Utrecht in Holland, went along to a poetry reading by the Australian poet Robert Gray. I had to admit I did not know this particular poet. She said it was a good reading with a translator on stage as well and some banter between the two and the poet and the audience in-between poem readings. I'm always amazed at people who translate poetry. It must be so very tricky to translate a poem successfully. So much of what makes a poem work is personal, subjective and full of nuance. To translate these aspects into another language must be incredibly difficult.
I almost can't imagine how you would go about it.

Help with loan modification

Times are hard for home owners, I think we can all agree on that for sure. The credit crunch has seen to it that more and more people are finding it hard to keep up with their mortgage payments and it does not look as though this situation will be easing any time soon. It is not easy to end up in a situation where your biggest asset, namely your very own house, is becoming a burden and a pressure for you in a very real financial sense.

If you need loan modification help then you may want to check out this E-book called The Loan Modification Guidetm, which could really help you out. This great and useful book is a step by step guide that will show you how to modify your own home loan. There is absolutely n need to be taken in by people charging silly amounts of money to help you with your loan modification. You can do it yourself easily with the help of this E-book. Now you too can have the mortgage assistance you are looking for.

Snapbomb

I just found about a very interesting paid to blog site with the intriguing name Snapbomb. This looks like a very promising blog review site and I am happy to create a bit of a buzz for them. I always welcome a new paid to review site when one comes along. As far as I am concerned Snapbomb looks like it could really work well for both bloggers and advertisers.

Blog advertising can really do wonders for a product or a company’s service. The exposure provided by a good blog post cannot be underestimated. What I like about Snapbomb is the speed with which you can register with them. You then submit your blogs for appraisal and within seconds you receive an estimate of your blog’s value.

I think this could be a really good site for bloggers and advertisers looking for blog marketing. Good luck, Snapbomb!

People

Just spent a nice quarter of an hour standing in line at my local post office. It was, in all fairness, very busy and the staff working there are invariably very quick and professional. Shopping

Have you heard about Black Friday? Well now, I will tell you about it. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when major retailers everywhere discount products to help launch the Christmas shopping season. These great Black Friday ads are normally kept secret until you receive the circulars in your Thanksgiving Day newspaper. But at Black-Friday.net, they hand you the advantage of showing you all of the Black Friday 2008 ads before anyone else. Using something like this Black Friday website can save you big time on many fabulous products but not only that there are other benefits as well. For instance, you will not have to get up at the crack of dawn to go and stand in line at one of the department stores just for the privilege of perhaps laying your hands on that last minute gift for you loved ones. Check out the 2008 thanksgiving specials for some great bargains.

This site is very useful in that it can really take the stress out of your last minute holiday shopping. It was a success last year and I am sure that it will be again this year. The holidays can be fraught and manic enough without the stress and anxiety of having to brace the shopping hordes in shopping malls and large department stores. Anything that can help with this is a good thing and Black-Friday.net can certainly help you with this so do check it out if you are interested in a more streamlined holiday shopping experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Violins have more than one string

Science is one of those endlessly fascinating games that people play with ideas. The method could not be easier to state. You propose a hypothesis and design an experiment to collect evidence to test whether your hypothesis is true (I always pay particular attention when anyone starts talking about truth — if ever there was a flexible friend, truth would be it). So, now your results are in. You claim definitive evidence that “proves” what you speculated was either true or not true. Now it is up to the rest of the world to see whether it can replicate your findings. The more independent people who can reproduce the same results, the more likely it is that your hypothesis is true or not true.

As an irrelevant aside given that I am writing about acomplia, did you see that they are cooling down the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), near Geneva, to look more closely for Higgs boson — the controvesially-named “God” particle. And, hoping that you will forgive me for a flippant moment, weight loss is also increasingly a “holy grail” given the epidemic proportions of the spread of obesity in the human population. So, this April has seen the results of the Stradivarius study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and featured in a presentation and discussion at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Cardiology held at Chicago.

The Strategy to Reduce Atherosclerosis Development Involving Administration of Rimonabant - The Intravascular Ultrasound Study (that is Stradivarius for short) has been looking for evidence that acomplia (generic name riminobant) will slow down the progression of heart disease among overweight individuals whose arteries are hardening. In other words, the trial was trying to define a specific role for acomplia in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Now a simple headline statement of the results — much to the disappointment of the College of Cardiology, there was no evidence that acomplia had any effect in slowing down the progression of atherosclerosis. You cannot imagine an audience more likely to be disappointed and therefore downbeat about acomplia. But, like those canny Scottish lawyers, I have a third wheel to my justice system. You are guilty, not guilty or the case is “not proven”. So the specific hypothesis of the Stradivarius trial is not proven. We still do not know to what extent acomplia may or may not have a part to play in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. But the other parts of acomplia continued to play in Stradivarius according to specification.

Stradivarius had 839 participants with an average BMI 35, whose average waist measurements were 46 inches. After eighteen months, those taking acomplia had lost an average 9.5 pounds and had trimmed their waist measurements by an average of 1.8 inches. Those taking acomplia showed improvement in other factors affecting the risk of cardiovascular disease: high-density cholesterol had risen by 22.4%, triglycerides had reduced by 20% and C-reactive protein diminished by 50%. There was also one very important component under the spotlight. The researchers report with statistical certainty that there were no psychological side effects to taking acomplia — a factor that caused the Food and Drug Administration to treat acomplia with suspicion and will be one of the key considerations when Sanofi-Aventis resubmit acomplia to the FDA later this year.

So, on balance, the results of the Stradivarius study are encouraging. They show a continuing pattern of weight loss maintained over time and a reduction in waist measurements among the participants. The study also does not rule out a future role for acomplia in the treatment of heart disease.

Book review

Well, yes, I am going to talk about a new book. Appropriately enough for a site devoted to Ambien, it is Insomniac by Gayle Greene (published by the University of California Press in March, 2008 — 978-0-520-24630-0). So here is an autobiographical take on what it is like to live with insomnia by a woman who ought to know. Gayle Greene has the distinction of being a non-professional member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). She wins this prize even though not a medical researcher because she is the “patient representative” on the board of the American Insomnia Association, which operates within the AASM’s umbrella. In her spare time (sic), she labours at the Scripps College, Claremont California as Professor of Literature and Women's Studies. This latest tome (quite heavy at 520 pages) adds to her impressive resume of academic publications.

This is a highly personal account by an articulate and intelligent woman who has been afflicted by insomnia for most of her adult life. In one sense, the only person who can really tell you what it is like in a foreign country is one who has been there. For those of us who have always been able to sleep without difficulty, insomnia is like a foreign country, and the idea of having to use a medication like Ambien as the passport to get into sleep is alien.

Conventional wisdom always says that insomnia is somehow related to anxiety or stress levels, perhaps aggravated by drinking too many cups of real coffee. Greene comes up with a simple and practical explanation of what insomnia is. Insomnia means nothing more than you cannot get the number of hours of sleep you need to feel good about yourself and function efficiently. There is no reason for this. It is nothing more than a failure to sleep. There should be no pejorative implication. To use stress as an excuse is to blame the person for being weak or neurotic when there is no reason to blame yourself or anyone else. Instead of looking for some psychological explanation or a less judgemental physical cause, we should just accept that it happens to about 20% of the population at one time or another during their lives. Such a vast number of people yet so little is spent on researching the condition and its causes. Greene comments that the National Institutes of Health in the United States spent less than $20m in 2005, whereas Sanofi-Aventis spent more than $120m promoting Ambien in the same year. This is neither to praise nor condemn Ambien. It is all a question of priorities. Why bother to spend Government money on researching the cause of a condition when private capital has already invented Ambien as a cure for it?

She debates what we really understand about cause and effect. It is so easy to get the cart before the horse, or should that be the other way round? Perhaps conventional wisdom has also got things back-to-front. Instead of stress and anxiety being the cause of insomnia, perhaps living with insomnia makes you stressed and anxious. Who is to say in these more modern times, that we did not have disturbed sleep patterns in past times living on the land? Folk tales may tell us that we went to sleep when dusk fell and waited for the cock to crow before waking. But was that actually the case? Who can say what the real biological norms were before electricity came along and gave everyone the chance to live through the darkness. As it stands, no researcher can actually explain why we have to sleep nor why some people sleep more than others. It is all guesswork.

All that we can say with any certainty is that those who are deprived of sleep do not do as well as those who sleep through the night. The sleepless so often end up demotivated, their sense of humour worn thin, their judgement warped. Some grow fat. Others find their immune system affected. Sleep seems so indispensable yet no-one can really control it. Greene describes everything she has tried over the years from relaxation therapies to medication like Ambien, but concludes that, like any intimate relationship, how we relate to sleep is always personal.

She is a passionate advocate for greater patient power to persuade disinterested bodies to research insomnia.

For one who has had to depend on Ambien and the other medications for so long, she feels she and all other sufferers deserve better answers than those served up by the pharmaceutical companies.

For one who has never had problems sleeping nor had to take Ambien , Insomniac was a riveting insight into the condition and the problems it causes. Required reading for everyone who reads this article.

The great Barry Humphries

Recently I bought a memoir by Barry Humphries of Dame Edna and Sir Les Patterson fame entitled More Please, apparently his very first utterance. I am saving the pleasure of starting to read if until I have some more time on my hands but it looks very promising. Some of the pictures of him as a young man are very telling; all arty-looking with foppish long hair and picturesque hats. Great stuff. He is a genius and all the way from Oz as well..

Alice

Velvet glove as night's startling fingers,
reaching out over the skies sweet embrace,
that tells us of belonging and hurt,
of mermaid tales and oblong tears,
running down a sheet of ice;
a pane of glass,
that mirror that had us almost..
..looking back at us.

Poetry, my erstwhile mistress

At work, a few weeks ago, a friend and colleague of mine with whom I share a passion for poetry and the written word, introduced me to someone who he said was a poet as well. She was a lovely lady who specializes in performance poetry. This, then, was another colleague in the library who would probably rather be a successful author than a library employee, but there you go.

I chatted with her for a while and it soon became apparent that she had not published many of her poems but would like to if given the opportunity. I thought that if I were still editing my poetry magazine I would certainly have invited her to submit.

It is always fun for me to talk about poetry as it is a subject that is not only dear to my heart but I think that I truly understand people's love for it. It's that most gentle and fragile and brutal of arts; unbeatable, really.

Dentistry

No one really enjoys having to go to the dentist but it is just one of those things in life that you have to deal with. People who had to wear braces as a child probably did not like that but I am sure that now they are all grown up they value having a nice smile, thanks to that corrective procedure. And some dentists are able to provide excellent and advanced techniques making for a very good experience.

For instance, have a look at this Beverly Hill dental site where you can read all about Mr. Maddahi’s practice and the success he has enjoyed providing his superb dental service. This is dentistry with a difference and well worth looking into if you desire excellence and quality care.

Mel Gibson

Just the other day I saw a clip of Mel Gibson talking about something or other. He now looks like an older bloke, all crinkly and wrinkled. No longer the stunning Antipodean cool-meister, he is a new film, the title just escapes me. I don't like anti-Semitism so his recent brush with the LAPD and some of his comments are still fresh in my mind. Oh well...perhaps I'll watch my old video of 'The Year of Living Dangerously' again.

New horror movie

There is a new horror film about to hit the screens and the title of this harrowing flick is Frontier(s). It looks like a must see by all accounts. Would you believe that this film is unrated and uncut and it will go to the cinemas like that? That, in itself, seems rather controversial as most films are carefully rated, especially horror films such as this one. This intriguing looking film will be in selected theatres from May the 9nth so get in early!

The select theater listings are now available from the website. You can see the listing for the major cities right there. You can also download the movie poster from that same website, which is a nice touch. I think I may want to go and see this movie right away. I do love a great film and one with which a certain measure of controversy is involved just makes it all the more enticing, don’t you agree? I am sure that this horror movie won’t disappoint lovers of the genre and movie goers in general. You can’t beat a great new movie in whatever genre but this one looks like a winner. You can buy the film on DVD from May the 13th. Should be good, eh?

Houses

Watched an episode of 'Relocation, Relocation, Relocation' last night. The strangest thing about this programme is the female presentor, Kirsty, who although she seems to know what she's talking about tends to put me off by her insane dress sense. She will appear sporting an endless choice of bizarre dresses and strange, wide skirts, bright red tights and odd shoes that seem to big for her somehow. I tend to tune to see what crazy get-up she'll be wearing this time.

Fashion

Fashion – A classic David Bowie song and a perennial topic of interest to many people, and not just for ladies. A certain sartorial elegance is something that I myself try to aspire to and something that I recognize and admire when I see it in others. Too many people these days are content with going out in public in casual wear when it is clear that playing sports is the last thing on their minds. It doesn’t take much to dress well and to go and buy nice items of clothing when choosing a new set of clothes.

Someone who I think always presents himself well is the actor Gabriel Byrne. Whenever you see him appear on some talk show or other he is turned out well, dressed stylishly and elegantly in a smart suit and shirt combo. He just manages to look the part. That sort of elegance inspires confidence, so perhaps fashion reaches further than just the surface.

A great line of clothing is also to be had from Dockers, who have a great assortment of stylish clothes available. You will look great in some Dockers gear so do by all means check it out. And while you are at it, why not create your own video commercial and enter it for the current Dockers contest, which is now going on.

Boris for Mayor!

Boris Johnson has won the race for Mayor of London. Read all about it here . Well done, Boris! I love the fact that the anti-semitic 'Red' Ken Livingstone has been defeated. Hopefully, Boris will be a good mayor and I'm sure we'll be able to enjoy a few gaffes and cock-ups along the way. But I'm sure he won't be inviting en endless stream of misogynist homophobic muslim clerics and shower them in the official honours at the discretion of the London Mayoral office; something that Livingstone loved doing. Good show, Boris! Now to work..

Fun and games

For some people finding excitement in their lives is not one of their priorities with all things being equal. They seem content to live their day to day lives without too much temptation or drive to do something out of the ordinary. They are happy to lead safe and mundane lives and that is just fine. After all, who am I to criticize these people for doing things the way they want to do them. It takes all kinds, as they old adage goes and there is nothing wrong with that at all, obviously.

But for many other people on the other hand a measure of fun and excitement are rather important things. Fun such as can be had by playing a game or making a bet with one of the many online casinos where they are able to do just that. Fun and games and the chance to win a few bucks with a well-placed bet; for many people that is a fun way to go. And, providing the whole venture is handled in a responsible manner there is nothing wrong with having a go with an online casino. But where do you go if you want to find out more about which online casinos are the best?

Online Casino Suite is a directory of certified online casinos, online gambling and games information and much more. Have a look to see what they can offer.

Poetry in football?

Watching the Barcelona player Messi last night I wondered if there is such a thing as art in sports, or poetry in football to be more specific. This player, said to be the world's best at the moment, is so adept at handling the ball that it becomes mesmerizing to watch him take on a series of defenders and slalom past them as if they were motionless pillars, unable to catch him. There is certainly style and elegance in his play. He does have that latin girly hair, though..

Bookworms

There is something about the cliche type of the bookish personality that appeals to me. The genteel nature of his or her manner, the eloquence of their educated choice of words; the unassuming quality of their personality.

But at times it vexes me as well. And of course there are many colleagues of mine who could be ascribed as I did above. Sometimes I feel squeamish at the thought how fragile they seem. As if the real world could crush them at any moment. But perhaps that is why I work where I do. Could I be one of them as well? Brrr...

Writing practice

Since I started writing more articles in a serious way I found that I am practicing my prose writing skills in just the right way. I am slowly learning to be concise and clear and to the point because of the inherent constraints of article writing. I intend to keep writing many more articles as they are a good way of writing on a regular basis. After all, practice makes nearly-perfect!

Let's hear it for IzeaRanks!

Writing is what I love to do most if I am honest. Just to put pen to paper or its more modern equivalent of typing onto a keyboard is what makes me tick. It is important to do what you like best, I think you would agree. I have written poetry and self-published a number of books, mostly poetry but some fiction as well, and I have enjoyed finding out how to go about producing, promoting and selling my literary efforts. I have had some limited success but have also learnt an awful lot and one of the things I have come to realise is that writing the actual piece is only the start of things. The hard work starts when you actually want a few people to take notice of your carefully crafted outpourings.

More recently I have started being seriously engaged in maintaining a number of blogs. I have always loved building and setting up new websites and I really like reaching out by writing regular posts on my blogs. I like to think that I am able to provide some decent content and entertain my readership with my scribblings.

After the debacle with that giant dominant search engine taking away people’s pagerank just because they were making some money with their blogs in a way that did not directly benefit them, some people have been wanting another way of ranking a blog’s popularity. This, then is where IZEARanks comes in. IZEARanks is a much more realistic gauge with which to measure and rank a blog’s links, impact and popular appeal and that is exactly what the blogging world has been waiting for with bated breath. IZEARanks will provide an accurate reflection of a website’s traffic ranking compared to other sites that are running the IZEA script. IZEARanks has a bright future because it will provide real traffic data that cannot be manipulated in the way that toolbar-dependent metrics can. Let’s hear it for IzeaRanks!

Poets at work

At my place of work, a major University library, there are many people who have an affinity with the written word. For some this may result in a very useful specialisation which benefits their careers within information sciences. For others, and I magnanimously include myself, working in a library is a way to be around books while we dream and hopefully work towards being a writer of some description ourselves.
I have lots of colleagues who write poetry, sci-fi novels, non-fiction, articles and so on. From that point of view it is a nice working circle but I when I get slightly disheartened I sometimes wonder whether we'd all rather be doing something else.

Automation and software

GRSI FastTrak (R) P.I. software takes on packaging integration in full stride
Written by Andrew Jobs
Conshohocken, PA, 4/2/2008 – FastTrak® P.I. (packaging integration) fulfills previously neglected packaging needs with total warehouse equipment and systems integration.

Having trouble finding a company that integrates any branded packaging equipment, material handling equipment, PLCs, and WMS’ into a streamlined warehouse system? Until now, every distribution and operations manager had only one answer, a frustrated yes. GRSI is taking the initiative to relieve their headaches by introducing a comprehensive packaging integration solution, FastTrak® P.I.

FastTrak® P.I. software suite makes packaging integration easy. The software “glues” diverse packaging and material handling equipment and subsystems from any provider into one integrated unit. In addition, the software integrates this unit to any WMS or ERP host system with single-port connectivity. The result reduces labor intensive tasks, increases order throughput, maximizes system uptime, and allows the synched equipment to run at its full potential.

One of the most frequently asked questions by companies purchasing new or used warehouse equipment is, “Will the equipment function correctly with my warehouse system?” GRSI removes this uncertainty with comprehensive warehouse systems integration backed by substantial work experience. GRSI’s engineers and technical team meticulously evaluate each client’s system, specific needs, budget, and expectations to develop the most effective solution. Once the solution is conceived, GRSI assembles custom-built modules and applications to integrate all the necessary equipment and meet client requirements. Each client is then educated and trained to handle the routine operations of their system. In addition to systems training, GRSI also offers 24x7x365 technical support.

GRSI’s strategic partnerships with packaging and material handling equipment providers have led to many successful installations often exceeding client’s expectations. GRSI’s growth is from developing these relationships, along with the willingness to understand new and emerging technologies and markets.

Not all businesses have the same needs, nor do all businesses desire the same outcome. Consequently, it is necessary for each business to have their needs analyzed and evaluated by an experienced company with a customized solution.

Blakey

I was minding my business, sitting on the bus in heavy commuter traffic through the city centre, whilst listening to the Russell Brand podcast on my ear-phones. It was the usual nonsense and puerile tomfoolery but at one point he read out a few lines of the William Blake poem 'The Infant Sorrow', and this made a bit of an impact on me. In-between all the modern vacuousness of an afternoon a few lines of beauty in pure poetry came my way. Thanks, kind Sir. Blake, not Brand..

Table legs and such

I live with my darling wife in an older Victorian-style property. I love living in a house that has some character and history and it has been good fun decorating and generally doing the house up. There is always something to do around the house and a love of D.I.Y. does come in handy.

We replaced the spindles in the banisters that lead up the staircase and we were really pleased with the result. Furniture legs and items like these and other legs such as table legs are, of course, available from Timber Wolf Forest Products.

Art Deco image

For your delectation, an Art Deco image I came across entitled Light and Water. I think it's a very fine work of art, elegant and solid at the same time. I like the interplay of strong, slightly autumnal colours as well.

Hobbit sold

There is an interesting news item on Reuters today about a first edition of Tolkien's The Hobbit being sold for a record amount. Apparently it was purchased by an anonymous telephone bidder. Not bad if you have sixty thousand quid lying around. I wonder if Tolkien realised how big a hit it would turn out to be?

Romancing..say it with poetry

I watched an episode of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' this morning in which Deborah mentions a love poem a boy once wrote for her. Obviously, Raymond is immediately and retrospectively jealous and demands to hear the poem. It is clear that Deborah cherished this token of the infatuated boy's admiration as the kept it for so many years.

Ray is scathing and derogatory about the little verse, which is perhaps a tad trite but genuine at any rate. His discomfort is telling and also the fact that Deborah loves the fact that she once inspired someone to write poetry.

And isn't that exactly why poets write their verse? To woe a girl, to chase and seduce the Muse herself? A real girl or woman will appreciate a fine poem dedicated to her charms. That will never change and nor should it. Some may think that chivalry is dead; let me assure you that Romance is alive and kicking.

Madame Butterfly

We went to see the opera Madama Butterfly last night and had a wonderful time. Everything about it was perfectly beautiful: the music, the lyrics, the voices, the set. The whole thing was a joy for the senses and a wonderful night out. I am sure that we will catch this particular Puccini opera again sometime. Stunning!
