We all have to pay the bills and so most of us will have to work for a living. That is just the way it is, I’m afraid. And, in my time, I have had a series of different jobs and carried out widely varying duties in the process.
The funny thing is that one working implement was part and parcel of my daily working life in several jobs. As a supermarket check-out operator I saw the introduction of
barcode scanners that revolutionised the world of retail and the manner in which retail products were dealt with in the shop and in the store.
It took some getting used to but most of the staff found that the barcode scanners were a vast improvement to the work and made things a lot easier.
In another job I enjoyed I worked with barcode scanners in a similar way. While I worked in public and academic libraries I used a barcode scanner on a daily basis to record the issue and return of library materials, books, CDs, and journals. All items were recorded in the system by scanning the item’s barcode.
It’s hard to underestimate how much of an innovation barcode scanners have been in all sorts of sectors and industries. You can’t imagine doing without barcode scanners, really.
